The apple of the eye, which is surrounded by the iris, is called אִישֹׁון, the man (Arabic insân), or in the diminutive and endearing sense of the termination on: the little man of the eye, because a picture in miniature of one's self is seen, as in a glass, when looking into another person's eye. בַּת־עַיִן either because it is as if born out of the eye and the eye has, as it were, concentrated itself in it, or rather because the little image which is mirrored in it is, as it were, the little daughter of the eye (here and Lam_2:18). To the Latin pupilla (pupula), Greek κόρη, corresponds most closely בָּבַת עַיִן, Zec_2:12, which does not signify the gate, aperture, sight, but, as בַּת shows, the little boy, or more strictly, the little girl of the eye. It is singular that אִישֹׁון here has the feminine בַּת־עָֽיִן as the expression in apposition to it. The construction might be genitival: “as the little man of the apple of the eye,” inasmuch as the saint knows himself to be so near to God, that, as it were, his image in miniature is mirrored in the great eye of God.
Yisrael is the apple of YHWH's eye
Deu 32:9 For YHWH's portion is His people; Jacob is the lot of His inheritance.
Deu 32:10 He found him in a desert land, and in the waste, a howling wilderness. He encircled him and cared for him; He guarded him as the pupil of His eye.
Deu 32:11 As the eagle stirs up its nest; it hovers over its young; it spreads out its wings and takes it, and bears it on its wing.
Zec 2:8 For so says YHWH of Hosts: He has sent Me after glory, to the nations who plundered you; for he who touches you touches the pupil of His eye.
Torah (Yahshua) is to be the little guy in our eye
Pro 7:2 Keep my commands and live, and my law as the pupil of your eye.
A look at the english word pupil connects this concept of the apple of the eye to study (of the Torah).

1. A youth or scholar of either sex under the care of an instructor or tutor.
Walking as His disciples/students is seeking His Face as the apple of His eye/little guy in His eye. The word 'seek' comes from d'rash which means to study.

The apple in the eye indicates an intimate relationship with another where you are so near one another that you can see your miniature self in their pupil. The Scriptures admonish us to seek that relationship with the Most High.
1Ch 16:11 Seek YHWH and His strength, seek His face continually.
Psa 27:8 My heart said to You, Seek my face; Your face, O YHWH, I will seek.
Shadow of His Wings
Being the little guy in His eye is also associated with dwelling under the shadow of His wings.

Deu 32:10 He found him in a desert land, and in the waste, a howling wilderness. He encircled him and cared for him; He guarded him as the pupil of His eye.

When the Scriptures speak of abiding in the shadow of His wings it is speaking of an intimate relationship were we dwell in His bosom, seeking His face where we see ourselves as a little guy in His eye. We are protected from adversity.
The other portion of Scripture that speaks of the "apple of His eye" is in Zechariah. Zechariah does not speak of eagles wings but the same concept is spoken of as YHWH will be a wall of fire AROUND us. Here it can be seen that the pillar of fire and cloud in the wilderness is associated with Him bearing us up on eagles wings.
Zec 2:8 For so says YHWH of Hosts: He has sent Me after glory, to the nations who plundered you; for he who touches you touches the pupil of His eye.
Zec 2:5 And I will be to her a wall of fire all around, and I will be for glory in her midst, declares YHWH.
Psa 91:1 He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide in the shade of the Almighty.
Psa 91:2 I will say to YHWH: My Refuge and my Fortress, my God; I will trust in Him.
Psa 91:3 For He delivers you from the fowler's snare, from destruction's plague.
Psa 91:4 With His feathers He will cover you, and under His wings you shall seek refuge; His truth is a shield and buckler.
Psa 91:5 You shall not fear the terror of night, nor of the arrow that flies by day;
Psa 91:6 of the plague that walks in darkness, nor of the destruction laying waste at noonday.
Psa 91:7 A thousand shall fall by your side, and a myriad at your right hand; it shall not come near you.
Psa 91:8 Only with your eyes you shall look, and see the retribution of the wicked.
Psa 91:9 Because You, O YHWH, are My refuge; You make the Most High Your habitation*,
*Making the Most High our habitation; Abiding in the Almighty
Psa 71:3 Be a rock of strength for me, to which I may always go; You have given a command to save me; for You are my rock and my fortress. The Rock is associated with dwelling under His wings.
Psa 71:4 O my God, deliver me out of the hand of the wicked, and out of the hand of the unjust and the ruthless.
Psa 71:5 For You are my hope, O Lord YHWH, my trust from my youth.
Psa 71:6 I have rested on You from the belly; You are He who took me out of my mother's womb; my praise shall be always of You.
Psa 71:7 I am like a wonder to many, but You are my strong tower.
Pro 18:10 The name of YHWH is a tower of strength, the righteous runs into it and is set on high. HIS NAME=HIS CHARACTER=HIS WORD=YAHSHUA. Dwelling in the Rock=abiding under the shadow of His wings=dwelling in the strong tower=abiding in the Word=abiding in Him.
Psa 91:10 no evil shall happen to You, nor shall any plague come near Your tent.
Psa 91:11 For He shall give His angels charge over You, to keep You in all Your ways.
Psa 91:12 They shall bear You up in their hands, that You not dash Your foot on a stone.
Psa 91:13 You shall tread on the lion and adder; the young lion and the serpent You shall trample under foot.
Psa 91:14 Because He has set His love on Me, therefore I will deliver Him; I will set Him on high because He has known My name. (Pro 18:10)
Psa 91:15 He shall call on Me and I will answer Him; I will be with Him in distress; I will rescue Him and honor Him.
Psa 91:16 I will satisfy him with length of days (eternal life), and will make Him see My salvation (Yeshua). Here we can see that those who abide in the shadow of His wings will be protected from adversity, they will be given eternal life and will see Yahshua.
Psa 17:5 My steps have kept in Your tracks (cycles of righteousness-see Torah portion study) so that my strides have not slipped.
Psa 17:6 I have called on You, for You will answer me, O God; bow down Your ear to me and hear my word.
Psa 17:7 Set out your wonderful loving-kindness by Your right hand (Messiah), O Savior of those who trust in You, from those rising against them.
Psa 17:8 Keep me as the pupil, the daughter of the eye; hide me in the shadow of Your wings,
Psa 36:7 How precious is Your mercy, O God! And the sons of men take refuge in the shadow of Your wings.
Psa 36:8 They shall be satisfied from the abundance of Your house; and You make them drink the torrent of Your pleasures. (Referring to Eden/the Kingdom.)

Psa 61:2 From the end of the earth I call to You when my heart faints; Oh lead me to the Rock that is higher than I. (Again we see the Rock associated with abiding under His wings)
Psa 61:4 I will dwell in Your tabernacle forever; I will trust in the shelter of Your wings. Selah.
Psa 63:7 For You have been a help to me, and I will rejoice under the shadow of Your wings.
Psa 63:8 My soul is cleaved (clings Deu 10:20; 11:22) after You; Your right hand (Messiah) upholds me.
Abiding in the cleft of the rock = abiding under the shelter of His wings
Psa 61:4 I will dwell in Your tabernacle forever; I will trust in the shelter of Your wings. Selah. Abiding in the Tabernacle = abiding in the shelter of His wings
Rev 7:15 Because of this they are before the throne of God, and serve Him day and night in His sanctuary. And He sitting on the throne will spread His tabernacle over them.
Psa 27:5 For in the day of evil He shall hide me in His shelter (sukkah); in the secrecy of His tabernacle He shall hide me; He shall set me up on a rock.

Here we see that the word Etam means an eagle's wings in the sense of wrapping. Samsom dwelt in the cleft of the Rock (Rock = Messiah 1 Cor 10:4) in the city of Etam (wrapped in eagles wings)
It is also interesting that the word for pen/stylus comes from this same root word and is associated with the eagle's/bird of prey's talons.
Another association of the eagles wing's is the Word. Abiding under the shadow of His wings = abiding in the Word/Messiah.Dwelling in the cleft of the Rock is also teaching about intimate relationship with the Almighty.

Exo 33:22 And as My glory is passing it will be that I will put you in a cleft of the rock; and I will cover My hand over you during My passing.
Exo 33:23 And I will remove My hand, and you shall see My back; but My face cannot be seen.

Kerubim
Cherubim overshadowed the ark of the covenant with their wings...abiding under His wings=abiding in His Word/Yahshua. The Kerubim were those who guarded the Tree of Life. When we are abiding under the shadow of His wings we are entering back spiritually in the Garden. See PaRDeS studies below.

Abiding in the Shadow of His wings means we are protected from adversity. This can also be seen by walking in the Torah.
Psa 94:12 Blessed is the man You chasten, O YHWH, You teach him out of Your Law;
Psa 94:13 to give him rest from troubled days, until the pit is dug for the wicked.
Psa 94:14 For YHWH will not leave His people; nor will He forsake His inheritance.
Abiding under the shadow of His wings again goes back to the imagery in the Temple of the Kerubim. Abiding in His Word = abiding under the shadow of His wings = abiding in Messiah (John 15)
Under His wings = under His skirt/kanaph.
This is a term of intimacy between a man and His wife.
Deu 22:30 A man shall not take his father's wife, and shall not uncover his father's skirt.
Rth 3:9 And he said, Who are you? And she said, I am your handmaid Ruth, and you shall spread your skirt over your handmaid, for you are a kinsman redeemer.
Eze 16:8 And I passed by you, and I looked on you, and, behold, your time was the time of love. And I spread My skirt over you and covered your nakedness. And I swore to you and entered into a covenant with you, declares the Lord YHWH. And you became Mine.
His skirt also is thematically connected to the tzitzit which is a picture of His Body and is also thematically connected to the regathering of the tribes of Yisrael and the resurrection but this will have to be expounded upon in a future study.
May we all abide under the shadow of His wings and see ourselves as the Little Guy in His Eye, walking closer and closer with Him as each day passes.
